Steven R. Gambert, MD, AGSF, MACP, is Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine where he is also Associate Chair for Clinical Program Development and Director of Medical Student Programs in the Department of Medicine. He is Director of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center and Director of the Geriatric Medicine Program at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Maryland, he held positions as Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, and Program Director of the Johns Hopkins University/Sinai Hospital Residency Program in Internal Medicine. Prior to moving to Baltimore, he was Professor of Medicine and Vice-Chairman for Academic Affairs of the Department of Medicine at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School where he also was Course Director of the medical school’s Introduction to Clinical Medicine and Clinical Skills Courses. Between 1983 and 1996, Dr. Gambert was Professor of Medicine, Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Director of the Center for the Study of Aging and Health Promotion at New York Medical College. Between 1993 and 1996 he served as their acting Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Director of Medicine at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York. During this time, he additionally was the President of Medical Research Associates, a large multi-specialty medical faculty practice and Medical Business Associates, a physician management and billing company. Dr. Gambert has spoken nationally and internationally on a wide variety of subjects dealing with the health care of the elderly, the process of aging and age-prevalent illnesses, Geriatric Assessment, and nutrition and metabolic abnormalities. His research has focused on aging and neuropeptide regulation, thyroid hormone economy, diabetes mellitus, geriatric assessment, health care delivery and advances in medical education. He has been a recipient of the Geriatric Medicine Academic Award of the National Institute on Aging, the Joseph T. Freeman Award of the Gerontological Society of America, the Laureate Award and the C. Lockard Conley Award for Excellence in Teaching from the American College of Physicians, among others. He served as a member of the National Board of Medical Examiner’s USMLE Step 3 Committee and was recognized as one of America’s Best Physicians in the American Health Journal’s national physician survey and in the Castle-Connolly Guide, “America’s Top Doctors”. Dr. Gambert has been elected a Master of the American College of Physicians, the ACP’s highest honor, in recognition of his preeminence in the field of Internal Medicine.
