Before receiving his Medical Degree from University of North Carolina, Dr. Terel Spencer Newton received his Bachelor of Science from East Carolina University. After completing his internship with the Department of Anesthesiology at UNC Hospitals, Dr. Newton stayed on as a Resident Physician. He then worked as a Pain Medicine Fellow and Clinical Instructor with Fletcher Allen Health Care at the University of Vermont. On top of his extensive medical experience, Dr. Newton also has a background in the field of education. Before becoming a teaching assistant at UNC, he worked as an Earth Science teacher for Pitt County public schools as well as an Organic Chemistry supplemental instructor for East Carolina University. Dr. Newton has remained active in professional organizations such as the American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, and the American Medical Association. For 2 years, he also served as President of the Anesthesiology Interest Group at UNC School of Medicine. Throughout his career, he has also done vast amounts of research and presentations on pain and the complications of treatment. Most recently, he presented at the Annual Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Symposium on the topic of “The Use of Digital Subtraction Angiography in Preventing Complications from Cervical Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injections.” Throughout the years, Dr. Newton has continued his education at both UNC and Harvard Medical School in areas such as pain, addiction, and anesthesia. He is certified in both Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Dr. Newton specializes in many interventional techniques including but not limited to discography, various nerve blocks, and joint injections.
