Late-winter and early-spring is peak season for meningococcal meningitis, a serious bacterial infection that can take the life of a child in just a single day. The National Association of School Nurses’ (NASN) is urging parents of preteens and teens to help protect their children against meningococcal meningitis by getting them vaccinated.

Amy Garcia, RN, MSN, is the Executive Director of the NASN, an organization that supports the health and educational success of children throughout the United States by providing leadership to advance the school nursing practice. The organization itself consists of more than 17,000 nurses and reaches an estimated 16 million students each year. The NASN recently launched the Voices of Meningitis campaign, which brings together school nurses, meningitis survivors and families personally affected by the disease to help raise awareness about the dangers of meningococcal meningitis and to encourage families to speak with their child’s school nurse or health-care provider about vaccination.
