Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone needed to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy needed for daily life. Obesity is one of the leading risk factors for developing the most prevalent form of diabetes, Type 2 (adult-onset). In acknowledgement of November being National Diabetes Month, Nicholas "Dr. Nick" Yphantides, M.D., M.P.H., medical spokesperson for TOPS joins the show.
Guest Info
Dr. Nick Yphantides is an advocate for those in his community who need it the most. For eight years, Dr. Nick served as medical director of the largest network of Community Clinics in San Diego and is proud of the fact that he has never seen a patient with private insurance in his life. Ultimately he took his advocacy into politics serving as the publicly elected Chairman of the Board for Palomar Pomerado Health, the largest Public Hospital District in California.

Despite his community popularity and accomplished career, Dr. Nick was “board certified” in medical hypocrisy. He weighed in at nearly 500 pounds and was perhaps the fattest doctor in America! So, seven years ago, Dr. Nick temporarily retired from all of his job commitments to address his own personal health needs. Over the course of a year he drove 38,000 miles, visiting every state in America, and in the process achieved an enduring transformation of his personal health by losing 270 pounds without surgery! He accomplished this amazing feat by truly changing his life. He is now passionate about giving hope, inspiration, and encouragement to individuals and institutions in need of making positive changes.
