Food allergy is estimated to affect roughly 1 in 25 school-aged children and is a common trigger of anaphylaxis, a severe, potentially fatal, systemic allergic reaction. Dr. Todd Mahr, MD, FAAP, joins the show to discuss food allergies in children and the life saving information every parent and caregiver needs to know.

Todd Mahr, MD, is director of pediatric allergy/immunology at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He is also clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, Dr. Mahr obtained his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. He completed an internship and residency at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, La Crosse Lutheran Hospital, and was a fellow in allergy/immunology at Children’s Memorial Hospital, Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Mahr belongs to numerous allergy societies, was on the Board of Regents of the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology and is past president of the Wisconsin Allergy Society. He has been active in the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), serving on various committees, as faculty at annual meeting and Practical Pediatrics course, and currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Section of Allergy and Immunology and the Practical Pediatrics Planning Group. He is on the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network - Medical Advisory Board. He has been on the ALA-Wisconsin Board of Directors, and is currently Vice Chair of the Leadership Board of the ALA-Wisconsin. He was selected to serve on the American Lung Association National Assembly beginning July 2010. He is chair emeritus of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention–funded Wisconsin Asthma Coalition. Dr. Mahr is the recipient of the American Lung Association’s Volunteer of the Year award for the year 2000 and the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services “Partners in Public Health” certificate of recognition given in November 2007. He also received the “Distinguished Service Award” from the ACAAI in 2008.
