Child Sexual Abuse
Sexual abuse is a difficult subject for most people to discuss. But as frightening as the topic may be, sexual abuse is a serious and, unfortunately, not infrequent problem. Literally millions of children are victims of this form of abuse. Robert D. Sege, MD, FAAP a member of the AAP Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect comes on the show to discuss this very important topic and guide parents on what they can do to protect their children from sexual abuse. Robert Sege, M.D., Ph.D. is the chief of Ambulatory Pediatrics at Boston Medical Center, medical director of the hospital’s child protection team, and a Professor of Pediatrics at Boston University. He is a member of American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect, and previously served on the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Injury, Violence, and Poisoning Prevention from 2003-2009. He is a member of the CDC’s Knowledge to Action working group on child maltreatment prevention.
His research involves the development of a health care response to violence involving children and adolescents. He is the principle investigator of project dulce: developmental understanding and legal collaboration for everyone, a maltreatment prevention research and development project that uses the medical home to strengthen the families of newborns. Previously, he directed the development of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ violence and maltreatment prevention program, Connected Kids: Safe, Strong, Secure, which was funded by the US Office of Juvenile Justice and delinquency prevention and the CDC. In recognition of this work, he was the recipient of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ 2008 Fellow Achievement Award.
Dr. Sege’s contributions to the field of violence and abuse prevention focus on the development of practical, science-based approaches that incorporate new understandings of prevention with innovative interventions, particularly in the medical setting. He has lectured extensively on the topic locally, regionally and nationally, and is the author of numerous scholarly articles and textbook chapters. Dr. Sege has served in an advisory capacity for state and national government and foundation efforts.
