Fibromyalgia sufferers have reason to hope that a new therapy may finally provide relief for this painful and baffling condition. A mind-body therapy, known as Affective Self-Awareness, was shown to significantly reduce pain in fibromyalgia patients who participated in a recent study.

Dr. Howard Schubiner is board-certified in pediatrics, adolescent medicine, and internal medicine. He was a Professor at Wayne State University for 18 years and is now on the faculty of Internal Medicine at Providence Hospital in Southfield, MI. He is a fellow in the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Society for Adolescent Medicine. He has authored over 60 publications in scientific journals and books and performed research in the fields of adolescent health, ADHD and stress reduction. Dr. Schubiner has consulted for the American Medical Association, the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Mental Health and lectures nationally and internationally. Dr. Schubiner is a senior teacher of Mindfulness Meditation and is the founder and director of the Mind Body Medicine Center at Providence Hospital. He has conducted the first randomized, controlled research study in the field of Mind Body Syndrome for individuals diagnosed with fibromyalgia. He has been included in the Best Doctors in America list since 2003. He is the author, along with Michael Betzold, of "Unlearn Your Pain", a ground-breaking book that provides the reader with the science and the intervention program used in the fibromyalgia research study. Dr. Schubiner lives in the Detroit area with his wife of 25 years and has 2 children in their early 20's.
