The goal is to stabilize, slow or even reverse the progression of cardiovascular disease, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease, another cardiac event or death. Carol Ewing Garber, Ph.D., FAHA, FACSM, comes on the show to discuss the goals of a Cardiac Rehab program and to speak about adhearence to a program, and lifestyle changes to avoid future cardiac events. Guest Info Carol Ewing Garber is an Associate Professor of Movement Sciences at Columbia University, Teachers College in New York City. Previously, she held faculty appointments in the Bouvé College of Health Sciences at Northeastern University in Boston, MA and at the Brown University School of Medicine, Providence, RI. Dr. Garber is a Clinical Exercise Physiologist with over 20 years of clinical experience in heart disease prevention. Her research focuses on the role of exercise and physical activity on the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases. She has written over 70 peer reviewed articles and book chapters and serves on the Editorial Boards for the journals, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise and The Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention. Dr. Garber currently chairs the writing group for the American College of Sports Medicine Position Stand entitled The Quantity and Quality of Exercise for Developing and Maintaining Cardiorespiratory, Musculoskeletal, and Neuromotor Fitness in Apparently Healthy Adults: Guidance for Health and Fitness Professionals on Prescribing Exercise, and served on the writing committee for a previous Position Stand of similar title. Dr. Garber is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association.
