Are we in touch with our asthma? A new survey from the National Consumer League tells a very troubling story. Here in the United States, about 20 million people have been diagnosed with asthma; nearly 9 million of them are children. According to the NCL Harris Interactive survey, American asthma sufferers are not exactly breathing easily these days and there is a wide disconnect between doctors and patients.

Professor Gary Schwitzer is an Associate Professor
in the University of Minnesota School of Journalism & Mass
Communication. He is director of the school’s graduate program in
health journalism. He specialized in health care journalism in his more
than 30-year career in radio, television, interactive multimedia and
the Internet. Professor Schwitzer did a recent study that news
organizations are abandoning their usual healthy journalistic
skepticism when it comes to the coverage of some health screening tests
such as mammography and PSA tests for prostate cancer.
