Schiffman, M.D. joined the medical staff at Mission Hospital in 1987. As a Pulmonologist and Critical Care specialist, Dr. Schiffman studies a specific branch of internal medicine that focuses on lung diseases and respiratory function. His practice incorporates intensive or critical care medicine which often involves the use of mechanical ventilation. His focus is on the study and treatment of such lung conditions as asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), pulmonary rehabilitation, lung cancer, and sleep medicine. Dr. Schiffman is currently the chairman of Mission Hospital’s Critical Care committee and the medical director and founder of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Education Program (PREP). PREP is a tailored, comprehensive, multidisciplinary program that educates patients suffering from various lung conditions.
Dr. Schiffman is Board Certified in Internal Medicine with subspecialties in Critical Care and Pulmonary Diseases and has been a Diplomate with the National Board of Medical Examiners since 1983. He has completed research in numerous clinical studies and has been published in medical publications including the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology and the American Journal of Critical Care. Dr. Schiffman is currently involved in the a new device study called the Intrabronchial Valve Study (IBV), a national study investigating the use of an Intrabronchial Valve, a small umbrella-shaped device, as a treatment option for patients suffering from Emphysema. He is always looking for ways to help his patients breathe better and improve their quality of life.
