AAP Sun Safety Tips For Our Children

Sunscreen can help protect the skin from sunburn and some skin cancers, but only if used correctly. Keep in mind that sunscreen should be used for sun protection, not as a reason to stay in the sun longer.

Your child doesn’t actually have to be burned to be harmed by the sun. The effects of exposure build over the years, so that even moderate exposure during childhood can contribute to wrinkling, toughening, freckling, and even cancer of the skin in later life.

Dr.PATRICIA A. TREADWELL, MD, FAAD, FAAP comes on the show to discuss sun safety as we head intot he sunny summer months.

Dr. Treadwell is board certified in Pediatrics and Dermatology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. She is a graduate of Cornell University School of Medicine and completed residencies in Pediatrics and Dermatology at the Indiana University Medical Center. In 1983, she became an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Dermatology at Indiana University, and is now Professor of Pediatrics. In addition, she is a member of the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) Diversity Council and Chair of the IUSM Student Promotions Committee. She has been a practicing Pediatric Dermatologist and practicing Pediatrician for the past 27 years. Dr. Treadwell is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on CME, and the immediate past chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics CME Practical Pediatrics Planning Group. She is also a Past Chairperson of the Dermatology Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics and is now the NCE program chair for the section. She has been named to America’s Top Doctors for the past 8 years. When not involved in clinical duties, Dr. Treadwell participates in mentoring programs with the medical students and youth in Indianapolis
