Major David Harvey is an Officer in The Salvation Army. He is a graduate of Center High School in Kansas City, Missouri.

After High School he attended Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky where he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management. During his college days he had opportunities to work as a teller in a Bank, a construction laborer and in the post office. All of these helped him pay for his education.

After College he became a youth director for a Salvation Army Community Center in Dearborn Heights Michigan where he was able to assist this facility in becoming a full time recreation center and also offered one of the largest Summer Day Camps in Michigan. In 1987 he and his wife Darlene entered the Salvation Army College For Officers Training. This is a two year program in Chicago for the training and ordination of Salvation Army Officers. While in that program he was also able to work on his Masters of Church Management degree which he completed in 1993 from Olivet Nazarene University.

After graduation, David and Darlene were sent to their first appointment: Oak Creek Centennial Corps Community Center (A new Corps Opening in Milwaukee, Wi.) Oak Creek was a new corps community center where the Harveys were able to start a recreational facility, Day Care Center and 40 apartment units for Senior Citizens through HUD. They were stationed there for six years.

Their next appointment was to be Youth Leaders for the Salvation Army for the State of Indiana. This appointment was for three years where they were able to support youth outreach in the state including a summer camp for 740 kids, Christmas programs for 30 elementary schools in Indianapolis, and a music festival with 20 Christian Rock and Hip Hop artist promoting “sexual purity.”

After Indiana, they were appointed for two years to lead the Salvation Army in Green Bay Wisconsin. Here the Harvey’s lead a large service program including a free lunch program, nine transitional houses and a computer training center. They were also able to open a home for single teenage mothers—where mothers and their children received emotional and educational support to help them plan for their futures.

In 2001 The Salvation Army sent the Harveys to Santiago, Chile, South America. Here the Harveys were in charge of youth programs and financing development for the countries of Chile, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. They were there 2 ½ years and learned great life skills of culture, diversity, community development and the Spanish language.

They returned to the USA in 2003 where they were sent to teach at the Training College in Chicago. In 2005 The Salvation Army assigned them to develop the new Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center Project to be located at 119th & Loomis in West Pullman. This will be a multifaceted facility that will offer recreational, fine arts and a family life skills center. This center is proposed to have an indoor water park, competition pool, field house, gymnasiums, fitness center, performing arts theater, senior center, and a family life and education wing.
