Domestic violence is a serious issue in today's society and frequently is seen in the emergency departments. Dr. Mary Beth Phelan, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine for the Medical College of Wisconsin joins the show to help listeners learn about the scope of this problem, the signs of an abusive relationship and what you can do to help yourself or a loved one if they are in an abusive relationship.

Dr. Mary Beth Phelan is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of Ultrasound Education in the Department of Emergency Medicine and an affiliate faculty member of the Injury Research Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Phelan's areas of interest include the health consequences of intimate partner violence, injury prevention, intimate partner violence education for health care providers, the advancement of emergency ultrasound education, and most recently the use of simulation in resident education, especially with respect to emergency medicine ultrasound education and evaluation.
Dr. Phelan has completed an emergency medicine ultrasound fellowship and has contributed to the advancement of the medical impact of intimate partner violence and emergency ultrasound through workshops, presentations, lectures, and peer-reviewed journal publications. Since 1995, Dr. Phelan has been part of a multi-disciplinary consortium that has worked to enhance partner violence identification through intimate partner violence curriculum development and expansion for medical students, residents, and faculty at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She has collaborated with researchers to determine the impact of intimate partner violence on women and men seeking emergency medical treatment and has co-authored the book Domestic Violence Screening in Medical and Mental Healthcare Settings, Springer, 2004, in addition to local, regional, and national presentations and peer-reviewed journal articles on the topic of intimate partner violence. In 2007-2008, Dr. Phelan and a community partner (the Sojourner Family Peace Center) were awarded a Healthier Wisconsin partnership grant to further intimate partner violence education and to develop a multi-hospital and community agency partnership to improve the response of the medical community to victims of intimate partner violence.
