On June 11, 2009, the United States Senate took the nation one step closer to permanently altering the face of public health in America as it passed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which grants the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversight over the manufacture and sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products. Erika Sward, director for policy and advocacy for The American Lung Association joins Dr. DeSilva.

Erika Sward is Director of National Advocacy for the American Lung Association where she directs advocacy strategy and activities on tobacco control, health policy and other issues. She serves as the Lung Association’s lobbyist to Congress on tobacco and other lung health issues, as well as oversees the Lung Association’s federal advocacy outreach including grassroots lobbying and coalition partnerships. Prior to joining the American Lung Association, Sward was Associate Director for Advocacy at the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, where she worked primarily on federal legislation and policy.
