Topic Info
Successful living with diabetes can be helped or hurt by our system of medicine. Several things about diabetes make it a true challenge to manage by a busy doctor. Our system of health care does a remarkable job with short term illnesses and acute, life threatening situations. Few would dispute that we’re the best in the world. But we’re struggling in the area of chronic lifelong illness management, especially those that require an empowered, well educated and properly trained patient.
The diagnosis of Type 1 (insulin-requiring) diabetes in a child evokes a range of emotions — disbelief, denial, anger and bargaining are all used to cope with what may seem at first to be a slow death sentence. What the family learns right after diagnosis sets the tone of diabetes control for years to come.
Dr. Stephen Ponder, M.D., board certified pediatric endocrinologist, comes on the show to help families move forward from the diagnosis of Pediatric Diabetes to living a full life with the disease.
