Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the United States, limiting the activities of nearly 19 million adults. The CDC Arthritis Program is working to improve the quality of life for people affected by arthritis and other rheumatic conditions by working with states and other partners to increase awareness about appropriate arthritis self management activities and expanding the reach of programs proven to improve the quality of life for people with arthritis.

Jennifer Hootman, Ph.D., FACSM, epidemiologist with the Arthritis Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, comes on the show to discuss the Program aimed at helping those suffering with Arthritis to live a quality life and how Exercise is Medicine for Arthritis.

Dr. Hootman is currently an epidemiologist with the Arthritis Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Her research focuses on the epidemiology of musculoskeletal conditions, particularly activity-related injuries and arthritis and other rheumatic conditions, and the relation to physical activity and exercise, function and disability. She is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Athletic Training and Co-Editor of the Journal of Physical Activity and Health. She is a Fellow of both the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Athletic Trainers Association.
