September is Childhood Obesity Month, a month designed to focus our attention on the health and weight issues of today’s youth. More than 23 million children are overweight in the US, that’s 1 in every 3 children.

With more than 18 years of experience in helping obese children, Stephanie Walsh, M.D., is a leader in the field. As Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s Medical Director of Child Wellness, Dr. Walsh leads the hospital’s efforts in preventing and treating childhood obesity through encouraging Georgia families to live healthier lifestyles. To this end, Dr. Walsh led the effort to establish an obesity clinic at Children’s in 2008 to treat the problem of obesity and its related health issues.
Dr. Walsh is committed to serving more of Georgia’s children through expanding Children’s obesity clinic services in the coming years. Additionally, through a partnership with the Community Physician Advisory Council, she will work with pediatricians statewide to implement proven methods of treating obesity into their practices.
Along with her position as Medical Director of Child Wellness, Dr. Walsh is also active within the health care community. Since 2004, she has served as an Assistant Professor at the Emory School of Medicine and a Hospitalist at Children’s at Egleston. She also worked with Children’s to establish the initial exercise component of FitKids, a long-standing Children’s program to treat overweight and obese children in the primary care setting.
Emily Erickson is a graduate of Kennesaw State University, with a degree in exercise and health science. She received her American College of Sports Medicine Health Fitness Specialist certification in July 2011. Emily’s passion for educating others about healthy lifestyles has driven her to pursue a career dedicated to helping children who are struggling with obesity. Emily works as the exercise physiologist in the Health4Life Clinic at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, counseling overweight and obese patients and families in exercise and physical activity.
Alongside her position in the Health4Life clinic, Emily is also actively working with Stephanie Walsh, M.D. on the statewide initiative to work with pediatricians on implementing proven methods of treating obesity into their practices. Emily is an Atlanta, Georgia native.
