Obesity and Weight Management
Topic Info
The United States (U.S.) and many other countries are experiencing an epidemic of obesity. In the U.S., over 60% of the adult population is overweight or obese (1,2) and estimates are that between 20-25% of children and adolescents are overweight or obese (3,4). In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has collected state by state data suggesting that the prevalence of obesity began rising dramatically in the late 1980 and is still increasing at a high rate (5). Prevalence rates of obesity are increasing rapidly in most other countries in the world (6,7).
Stella Volpe, PhD, RD, FACSM. comes on the show to discuss the environmental factors in our increasing obesity epidemic in this country and to give us the best advice on how to eat for weight management and our optimal health.

Guest Info
Stella Volpe is a nutritionist and exercise physiologist whose research interests include obesity and diabetes prevention, body composition, bone mineral density, and mineral metabolism and exercise. Her current research studies the effects of the environment on obesity - both how
the environment can be changed to prevent obesity, and how the built environment has resulted in a more obese nation and world. Her interventions include changing portion sizes in cafeterias and making physical activity more a part of a person's day to bring about changes in behavior. Dr. Volpe is also studying the effect of a low-impact exercise program on weight loss in elderly African American women.
Dr. Volpe is on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania, where she holds several appointments. She also serves on the faculty of the Universita Degli Studi "Tor Vergata" in Rome. Previously, Dr. Volpe taught and conducted research at the University of Massachusetts. A Registered Dietitian with a master's degree in exercise physiology and cardiac rehabilitation, she earned a doctorate in human nutrition at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
