The month of June is traditionally a special time to celebrate the men in our lives. Just in time for National Men’s Health Week, June 14-20, and Father’s Day, June 20, Dr. Nick, medical spokesperson for TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), the nonprofit weight-loss support organization joins the show to offer a variety of tips and ideas to help improve men’s health that can also benefit the entire family.

Nicholas “Dr. Nick” Yphantides, M.D., M.P.H., serves as a medical spokesperson for TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly). Eight years ago, dr. Nick had an accomplished career as a medical doctor – but he weighed nearly 500 pounds. He temporarily retired to focus on his own personal health needs, and, in a year, drove 38,000 miles, visited every state in America, and lost 270 pounds without the assistance of surgery. A cancer survivor, he is now passionate about giving hope, inspiration, and encouragement to others in need of making positive changes.
Specializing in weight-loss, personal fitness, nutrition, corporate wellness, and pediatric obesity prevention and treatment, dr. Nick serves as an executive medical consultant to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. He also serves as co-chair of San Diego County’s Childhood Obesity Initiative. For nine years, dr. Nick served as medical director of the largest network of community clinics in San Diego. Ultimately, he took his advocacy into politics, serving as the publicly-elected chairman of the board for Palomar Pomerado Health, the largest public hospital district in California. He is the author of “My Big Fat Greek Diet,” a chronicle of his lifelong struggle with food. dr. Nick also has presented at conferences for the YMCA of the USA, Kaiser Permanente, and more. He received his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego in 1992 and his master’s degree in public health from Loma Linda University in 1994.
