This surprising result, combined with estimates by the National Institutes of Health that almost one-third of the US population is already obese, implies that the US is well on its way to a frightening health crisis.
"Because of the marked increase in the proportion of obese people, obesity has become an equal, if not greater, contributor to the burden of disease than smoking," writes researcher Haomiao Jia, PhD, of Columbia University, and colleagues.
