As the number of recalled eggs jumps to more than half a billion, The Humane Society of the United States is calling on the egg industry to stop cramming laying hens into tiny cages that are inhumane and pose a public health
menace. Every year, 142,000 Americans suffer egg-borne *Salmonella* infections—and that doesn’t include the cases tied to the current recalls. That’s an egg-borne epidemic, and it’s one that’s closely connected to these cruel
cages. *Each of the nine scientific studies published in the last five years comparing cage and cage-free egg operations found increased Salmonella rates
in the cage operations.*
