Heart Health: Valve Disease

Treatment for heart valve disease depends on the type and severity of the diagnosis. In some cases, careful monitoring is all that is needed; in others, medications can control the symptoms and slow or halt the progression of the disease. However, more serious cases require surgery to repair or replace defective valves. Dr. Pravin Shah, Hoag Heart Valve Center Medical Director joins the show to discuss heart valve disease; signs, symptoms, diagnosis and the latest treatment available.

Pravin M. Shah, M.D., M.A.C.C., is the chair and medical director of Hoag Heart Valve Center at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California. In addition, he is the medical director of non-invasive cardiac imaging and academics program at Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute. He is active in post graduate education, and has directed more than 50 educational programs for the American College of Cardiology. His clinical and research interests include heart valve disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, echocardiography with emphasis on intraoperative echo, and clinical diagnosis. Dr. Shah has traveled extensively in the United States and overseas as a guest lecturer.
