Choosing appropriate child care for your infant or young child can seem as overwhelming. As a parent, it is your responsibility to ensure that your child is safe and happy in a child care environment that is fun, educational, and nurturing.

Dr.Elaine Donoghue, MD, FAAP,Vice-chair for Medical Education Department of Pediatrics, LVHN, comes on the show to discuss how to choose childcare and when it is appropriate to keep your child home with an illness.

Dr. Donoghue is a general academic pediatrician who did her undergraduate work at Georgetown University and subsequently graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1985 and completed her residency at Emory in 1988. After serving four years in the Army at Fort Benning, she moved to University of Connecticut where she began to pursue her interests in teaching pediatrics to pediatric residents.

In 1992, she moved to New Jersey to take a teaching position at St. Peter’s University Hospital, an affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. At St. Peter’s, she directed the Child Protection Center and established an after-hours telephone triage service, in addition to serving as a pediatric attending for the inpatient, outpatient and nursery services. She was awarded an American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) CATCH grant in 1999 to work on a health care system for children in foster care and became the CATCH facilitator for New Jersey from 2002-2007. She moved to Jersey Shore University Hospital in 2004 to become the Director of the Division of General Pediatrics.

Dr. Donoghue’s interest in telephone management led to her appointment to the AAP Section of Telephone Care Board from 2003-2006, and she served as education/program director.

Dr. Donoghue also has an interest in the health issues of children in child care and became the Medical Director of Healthy Child Care New Jersey in 2000. She joined the Steering Committee of the AAP Early Education and Child Care SIG of the Section on Community Pediatrics in 2003, and became the chairperson of the EECC SIG starting in the summer of 2005. The SIG applied for and became an AAP Section in 2008 under Dr. Donoghue’s leadership. Dr. Donoghue was appointed to the AAP Committee on Early Childhood, Adoption and Dependant Care in 2006. Her interest in both child care and children with special needs led to her co-authoring a book, Managing Chronic Health Needs in Child Care and School with Dr. Colleen Kraft in 2009. She also created a curriculum for child care providers on Medication Administration in Child Care and is developing a second curriculum on Managing Infectious Disease in Child Care through a Healthy Futures grant from the McNeil Foundation.

Dr. Donoghue has been active at the AAP/NJ level as a CATCH facilitator, chair of the Child Care Committee, and as Vice-Chair of the Pediatric Council on Research and Education (PCORE) of the AAP/NJ. She was a Councilor-at-large of the AAP/NJ from 2005- 2009.

She moved to Pennsylvania in 2010 to become the Vice Chair for Medical Education at the Department of Pediatrics at the Lehigh Valley Health Network. She is also the Grube Endowed Chair for Medical Education at LVHN.
