On any given weekend along any given sideline in Southwest Louisiana, you might find an athletic trainer from Memorial’s Sports Medicine Program. Skilled in the care and treatment of injuries and illnesses that involve sports or physical activities at any level, these men and women are an asset to the area’s athletic programs by providing injury prevention, injury treatment, and rehabilitation. Jim “Doc” Murphy, ATC, PT, coordinator of Sports Medicine at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, is head athletic trainer for all McNeese sports, supporting the coaches and players in injury prevention, injury treatment, and rehabilitation. A commended Vietnam veteran, Murphy has spent most of his professional career in Texas and Louisiana. He has been the coordinator of Memorial’s Sports Medicine program for nearly 20 years, and has served as head athletic trainer at McNeese State University for the last 30 years. Murphy was named by the Southeast Athletic Trainers’ Association (SEATA) as the 2009 Athletic Trainer for a College or University in recognition of his exceptional service to Memorial Hospital, McNeese State University and other organizations, and has previously been recognized by the Louisiana Sports Medicine Society and the North American Rodeo Commission.
