Topic InfoMargie Whittaker is the Nurse Manager of the Surgical-Neuro-Trauma Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Mission Hospital. Margie plays a key role in promoting teamwork and cohesiveness between the nurses in her unit who work in both the hospital’s ICU and Trauma Department. She also ensures the nurses are meeting the new standards of practice as new brain injury protocols are integrated. The nurses under Margie’s leadership have become a strong team, helping produce amazing patient outcomes and even receiving national recognition for their successes. In 2005, Margie received the Excellent Nurse Manager award from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) for her work at Mission Hospital. Margie is also part of the Mission Hospital team that received a Medal of Honor from the Department of Health and Human Services for increasing organ donation rates in 2006 and 2007. She has been published in publications such as AACN Core Curriculum for Neuroscience Nursing and Advance Trauma Care for Nurses Instructor Manual. In 1998, Margie received the St. Joseph Health System/Mission Hospital Values in Action Award for “Dignity.” The Values in Action Awards are given to individuals who have made a positive difference in the quality of life in south Orange County through vocation, volunteerism, avocation and philanthropy.

Topic InfoDr. Theodore Benderev has been practicing with Mission Hospital since 1987, with a specialty in Urology. He has been a member of the Mission Hospital Foundation Board since 2003 and served as Chief of the Division of Urology in Mission Hospital’s Surgery Executive Committee from 1988 to 1999. His philosophy of care is anchored in a comprehensive approach to urological and gynecological needs, and is committed to every patient, no matter how difficult their problem. He first chose to go into Pelvic Medicine because of the “tremendous opportunity for improving a patient’s quality of life.” Benderev has extensive research experience in various urology treatments, from radiofrequency treatments to surgery devices. He even won the First Prize for Clinical Research from the Western Section American Urological Association Meeting in 1992. He is a member of several professional organizations including the American Urological Association and the International Continence Society. In addition to being published in numerous medical publications such as Urology Times and Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, he holds dozens of patents on medical devices and methods, such as a bladder neck suspension procedure and a bone anchor installation device.
