Thomas Altena is an Associate Professor of Exercise Science at Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. He was an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Missouri-Columbia after completing his doctoral work in Health and Human Performance at Oklahoma State University. He has authored and co-authored a variety research in topics such as: 1) comparison of elliptical and treadmill exercise, 2) body composition methods, and 3) lowering triglycerides to prevent heart disease with accumulated exercise versus a single exercise session. Thomas also is a sponsored triathlete and marathon runner. This past year completed the 29th annual Steamboat Spring marathon in Colorado and also the 70.3 mile half-ironman in Branson, Missouri. Thomas exercise occurs in the extremes of heat indices greater than 115?F and wind chills as low as -40?F. Thomas is a widowed father of two little boys who also are very active in swim team, sports teams, running and cycling.
