Dr. Jeff Runge has been a leader in emergency medicine, pre-hospital medicine and traffic safety for three decades. He became a fierce advocate for injury prevention through sound public policy while at Carolinas Medical Center, where he trained and taught emergency medicine. He served as president of North Carolina ACEP and as speaker of the North Carolina Medical Society.
In 2001, Dr. Runge was appointed by President Bush as the head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, where he continued his efforts to reduce highway deaths through innovative safety belt programs and improving the safety of SUVs. In 2005, he moved to the Department of Homeland Security, where he recently led nationwide efforts against bioterrorism and improved medical readiness for other catastrophic events. He served as assistant secretary for health affairs until August 2008. Currently, Dr. Runge serves as a consultant with a number of biodefense, medical preparedness and injury prevention organizations. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor of Emergency Medicine at The University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
