One in six U.S. adults suffers from bladder control issues. Overactive bladder is a common problem, which can have embarrassing symptoms that seriously impact a person’s quality of life.

Dr. Marcy Abel joins Dr. DeSilva to educate us about treatment options that can help patients reclaim control over their bladder health and their lives. We also meet Susan Whaley, who has found that medical intervention has helped her overcome her bladder control problems and allows her to now lead a normal, healthy life.

Susan Whaley never imagined that her bladder control problems would come to affect her daily living. An animal lover all her life, Susan began struggling with symptoms of what she would later learn to be overactive bladder (OAB), regularly experiencing leaking, usually with no warning at all.

After visiting a healthcare professional and discussing her symptoms, Susan quickly learned that her condition was not a normal part of aging, as she had originally believed. Following a diagnosis of overactive bladder (OAB) and discussing treatment options with her physician, Susan underwent a trial assessment with InterStim Therapy, which is often referred to as a pacemaker for the bladder.

After receiving InterStim, Susan noticed an immediate relief of her symptoms, proclaiming, “The difference felt like night and day, as I never expected to receive that amount of relief so quickly. My worst fear was that the therapy wouldn’t work for me, but the results were better than what I had hoped for.”
