Indira S. Lanig, MD, has served as chief of the SCI Service at Houston VAMC followed by 21 years at Craig Hospital in Colorado. She has served on multiple boards and served five years as Chair of the Program Committee far the American Paraplegia Society (APS). She served as Program Committee chair and co-chair of the 2008 and 2009 Congresses on Spinal Cord Medicine and Rehabilitation, bringing together four clinical societies of physicians, nurses, therapists, psychologists, social workers and researchers. As a member of the International Spinal Cord Society (lSCoS) she serves in a leadership position on its Council as the APS/Academy of SCI Professionals Liaison and as Deputy-Chair of its Membership Task Force.
During her tenure as the first black female president of APS, in 2008, Dr. Lanig was honored by her peers with the APS Special Recognition Award for her leadership, vision, and commitment. Dr. Lanig was the 2010 recipient of the prestigious APS A. Estin Comarr Memorial Award for Distinguished Clinical Service. This award, established in 1994 is presented to an APS member who has "demonstrated exceptional accomplishments in the area of clinical care of persons with SCI" and whose "commitment and contributions has had a positive impact an the quality of life for persons with SCI/Diseases." In 2005 she was presented the Baylor College of Medicine/University ot Texas Houston Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Alliance Distinguished Alumnus Award as well as the Jerome Gersten Clinical Teaching Award from the University of Colorado Health Science Center School of Medicine, where she remains on faculty. Dr. Lanig was the invited lead author and editor of the textbook A Practical Guide to Health Promotion after Spinal Cord Injury and has authored and coauthored several chapters on topics in SCI care, including a chapter in the forthcoming 5th edition of DeLisa's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
