Pediatricians can play a key role in preventing and identifying human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection by promoting risk-reduction counseling and offering routine testing to adolescent and young adult patients, according to a new AAP policy statement, appearing in the November 2011 Pediatrics (published online Oct. 31). Jaime Martinez, MD,one of the lead authors of the AAP new policy on screening adolescents for HIV, comes on the show to discuss this new policy and screening and prevention for other STIs. Dr. Jaime Martinez obtain his Bachelor’s Degree in Science from Yale University and his Medical Degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Newark, New Jersey. He completed a Pediatric Residency Program at the Children's Hospital in Newark, New Jersey then completed Fellowships in Adolescent Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland and in Adolescent Medicine Research at the Center for the Study of Adolescence Northwestern University, Department of Psychiatry and University of Chicago, Department of Human Development, Chicago, Illinois. Presently, he is Associate Professor of Pediatrics (CT)at the University of Illinois at Chicago (non salaried position) and Senior Attending Physician in the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at the John H. Stroger, Jr., Hospital of Cook County, Chicago. He is Program Director of the Ryan White Part-D funded Adolescent Medicine Program at the Cook County Bureau of Health Services Ruth Rothstein, CORE Center. Dr Martinez is a member of the Committee on Pediatric AIDS and fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is also Principal Investigator of the John H. Stroger, Jr., Hospital of Cook County Unit of the Adolescent Medicine Trials Network, a consortium of 15 sites that conducts clinical trials and data collection activities concerning the health of HIV-infected and un-infected adolescents.
